Note From the Principal- Oct. 2026

Parents & Guardians,

Thank you to everyone who attended Parent-Teacher Conferences last week! We had a great turnout, with approximately 93% of our K–8 families participating. If you were unable to attend, no problem! Please feel free to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher to schedule a time to meet in person, have a phone conference, or find another option that works for your family.

For parents of students in 4th–8th grade, a reminder that PowerSchool is a great way to stay informed and monitor your child’s progress throughout the year.

Teachers also shared students’ NSCAS spring assessment results during conferences. If you would like to learn more about your child’s results, this parent guide provides helpful information:

Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s educational journey!

Important October Dates

The end of the first quarter is October 14. There will be NO school for students on October 15 and 16. Report cards will be emailed home on October 23.

Thank You, 1R Families & PTO!

Mrs. McGowan would like to thank everyone for supporting our Scholastic Book Fair. Thanks to your generosity, she will be able to purchase approximately $2,500 worth of books for our library! Our teachers also greatly appreciated having their classroom wish lists supported and filled.

PTO also had a great turnout for Breakfast Buddies in conjunction with the Book Fair. It was wonderful to see so many families supporting our school and our students.

We were disappointed to have to cancel the Helgoth’s Pumpkin Patch Family Night due to weather, but we look forward to bringing this event back next year.

A few upcoming PTO events and fundraisers:

  • Wreath Sales: October 2–14
  • Delivery: Typically the week before Thanksgiving
  • Dining Night Out at Freddy’s: Tuesday, October 20, from 5:00–9:00 p.m.

Our teachers also greatly appreciated all of the food and goodies families provided during conferences. Thank you to our PTO for organizing this special treat!

Middle School Athletics

Middle school fall sports are winding down. Congratulations to all of our athletes and coaches on a great fall season!

Winter sports, including girls basketball and boys wrestling, will be starting soon. Please check with your athletes for schedules and information regarding upcoming parent meetings.

Northwest High School Activity Reminders

Attention NWHS Varsity Activity Families: During Northwest football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and other activities, we ask that students remain seated and supervised by their parents or remain in the designated student section.

This is an important safety concern. We have had students in parking lots, concession areas, and outside the football area without adult supervision.

For football games, playing football in the end zones or on the practice fields is not permitted, and students should not bring footballs to the games.

For volleyball, basketball, and wrestling events, students should remain seated and supervised rather than running in the hallways.

Please help us keep everyone safe by monitoring your children and knowing where they are throughout the event. Thank you for your attention and cooperation.

Lunch Fund Reminders

PowerSchool is set up to send weekly reminders regarding your child’s lunch fund balance.

  • If your balance is negative, a text and email reminder will be sent.
  • If your balance is below $6.00, you will receive a Sunday evening text reminder.
  • You may pay your child’s lunch balance online.

If you need assistance, please contact the 1R office at 385-6352. You may also contact the district office at 385-6398, extension 5168, and speak with Chelsie.

Weather & Emergency Communication

We will utilize Bright Arrow as our mass communication system for weather-related school closings and other important announcements.

To receive Bright Arrow text alerts, text YES to 790-41.

Please make sure your contact information is current and updated in PowerSchool so you receive important school and district information. We have no way of knowing when phone numbers or email addresses have changed unless they are updated in the system.

Weather-related announcements will also be shared through KOLN/KGIN 10/11, KSNB Local 4, KHGI Channel 13, KRGI Radio, and Northwest social media accounts.

Building Check-In Reminder

Please remember that a driver’s license is required for our check-in procedures when entering the building.

On behalf of the 1R staff and myself, thank you for your continued support of our school. We are off to a great start, and we look forward to a successful school year together!

If you have questions regarding your child’s education, please do not hesitate to contact the 1R office at 385-6352.

Sincerely,
Mr. Retzlaff
Principal
